When I select View > Document > New Document Pane, I get the dialog that asks me if I want to attach the Doc Pane to the Current Tab or the Main UI.  I'm having trouble understanding this concept, or how it is helpful.  I could understand wanting to be able to have two doc panes open, each viewing the doc content for two different items.  So in that case you'd want to lock a doc pane to a particular item, not to a particular workspace tab, or so it seems to me.

Also is there a way to tell whether a doc pane is attached to the Current Tab or the Main UI?  Or to change from one to the other?

I'm also asking because I'm wondering whether my freezing problems have are related to having a Doc Pane open that's attached to a Current Tab - to test this, I closed and reopened the doc pane, this time making sure to attach it to the Main UI rather than Current Tab.

well I guess it wasn't the Current Tab attachment that was causing the freezes.  I think i had both Welcome.sndb and Main.sndb with the doc pane attached to the Main UI, and both froze anyway.

Hi Jim,

I haven't used that feature recently, but the idea is:

  1. If attached to the main UI (docked or floating) it syncs with the currently selected item, be it in a grid or any other UI
  2. If attached to the current tab, then this Doc pane will only sync with the focus item in that tab. If the tab has more than one grid (i.e. it is a dashboard) then selecting one of the panes in that tab will show the content of the focused item in that pane.
So if you use the Doc pane for just a hand full of grids, then the other tabs will now use it and you gain some screen real-estate

Perhaps ensure that tabs do not have any Doc pane embedded and see if it still locks up

Hi Pierre, I think I finally get the idea of a doc pane attached to a tab vs. main ui.  Thank you for explaining that!  Something strange is happening though when I have a doc pane attached to the tab.  Say I click somewhere in the grid besides the current item - initially the grid does not respond to the click - but it finally does when I click the Windows taskbar below the IQ window.
